Cyber-Criminology and the Defense Against It
This presentation covers current events in cyber-criminology, and the impact that this has on today's enterprise networks, as well as future looking changes and potential impact. We will explore the various types of cyber-criminals, their motives, philosophies and vectors of attack. This presentation will also cover rootkit technology, and provide a basic overview and discussion of what these really are, how they impact the enterprise and ways to mitigate this threat. Finally, we will cover host and network based intrusion prevention technology. This will include the distinctions between the two, key points to consider before acquiring these solutions, key points to consider before a deployment, and best practices in production.
Jeff Silver, CISSP, Senior Security Engineer, IBM
Jeff is currently employed by the Internet Security Systems division of IBM, and works specifically with Network and Host Based Intrusion Detection and Protection Solutions in the Enterprise. He is also involved with the High Technology Criminal Investigation Association [HTCIA] and works with Law Enforcement to help bring a greater understanding between the Corporate Enterprise and Law Enforcement Communities. Jeff is a former field engineer for Network General/NAI and was involved in protocol analysis, network troubleshooting, PGP encryption solutions, and vulnerability scanning and assessment.
